Did you know Facebook once named Facemash? In 2003, Harvard University student Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) was dumped by his girlfriend Erica Albright (Rooney Mara). Felt upset, Mark returned to his dorm, got drunk and wrote a scathing blog entry about her. The writing inspired him to create an on-campus website called Facemash that allows the users to rate the attractiveness of female students. Mark was caught and received six months of academic probation after the crowded site traffic made Harvard’s website downed. His prank also caused him to become vilified among most of Harvard's female community.

However, FaceMash's popularity attracted Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss and their business partner Divya Narendra . The Winklevoss twins invited Mark to their final club, the Porcellian Club, where Mark was accepted as programmer for a proposed dating website called Harvard Connection which will be exclusive for Harvard alumnies.

Mark then approached his friend Eduardo and told him of his idea he called "Thefacebook". It is an online social networking website exclusive to Harvard University students. He explained that this would mimic the popularity of FaceMash but since signing up would be consensual it would avoid the ethical problems of the earlier site. Eduardo agreed to help Mark, providing $1,000 to help start the site. They distributed the link to Eduardo's connections at the Phoenix S-K final club, and it quickly became popular among the students. When the Winklevoss twins and Narendra examined Thefacebook, they believed Zuckerberg had stolen their idea while stalling on their website. Tyler and Divya wanted to sue Mark for intellectual property theft, but Cameron convinced them they can settle the matter as "gentlemen of Harvard" without going to court.
